From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Film encompasses individual motion pictures, the field of film as an art form, and the motion picture industry. Films (also referred to as movies or motion pictures) are produced by recording images from the world with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating — or indoctrinating — citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue. Films are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement. The origin of the name "film" comes from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) has historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, moving picture, photo-play and flick. A common name for film in the United States is movie, while in Europe the term cinema is preferred. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema and the movies. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Should I start my career in film by attending film school? Q. I've always wanted to work in the film-movie industry. Lately I decided to attend a 2-year film school when I turn 18, but some of my friends discourage me from doing this. They say film school is money-wasting, that using that money to make a movie is even better! I'm very confused, if not attending a film school then what should I do?? Are there any other ways than going to film school? Any advice is really appreciated. Thanks very much in advance! Asked by Liver - Fri Aug 7 20:57:45 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you grew up around filmmakers, and have already learned everything they know about film making, then maybe you don't need film school. Otherwise, you should go to "film school." Note that there are various universities with which you can choose film as your major, so you'd still get a full, well-rounded college education, and also learn what you need about making films. Answered by Glenn - Fri Aug 7 21:22:11 2009 How can I film a night scene with only basic camera equipment (but decent software)? Q. I am filming a video project for school. We have a very basic video camera/camcorder. We do not have any other camera equipment or lighting equipment. However, I am able to use Sony Vegas 9 to edit my videos. How can I film/edit a good-looking night scene? This scene is supposed to be inside a house, at night. Asked by John S - Thu Nov 26 06:48:28 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The only way you're going to get a half decent picture is to slow the shutter speed right down - there is usually a setting on the video camera if you can find a manual override in the menus. If you can't find this option, check if there is a "nightshot" option - Sony includes this on many of their models - this invokes an infra-red LED that will illuminate the scene and causes the picture to give off that greenish tinge popularised in the Blair Witch Project. Good luck - sounds like a lot of fun! Answered by Matt - Thu Nov 26 08:17:31 2009 What film dissapointed you the most, that you expected to be good?
Q. I think for me Matrix Revolutions...the first film was so strong, the second one was average and the last one was terrible. I expected a strong close to the trilogy. What's yours? Asked by Michael. - Mon Dec 22 08:55:06 2008 - - 27 Answers - 0 Comments A. Honestly the movie "The Happening". Actually I almost expected it to suck because anything that M. Night does starts off good but slowly fades and gets worse and worse throughout the movie. But the reviews for this were decent and the movie started out so good! But the ended sucked some serious ass. =P I agree with the answer that said "Dragon Wars" I watched that and hated it. It was hard to follow and the graphics were horrible, the movie had a lot of potential but turned out to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
